Aiming for the Playoffs

With General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff locking in the core of a young Winnipeg Jets team for at least the next three years (Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little and Zach Bogosian just signing for five, six and seven years respectively for a total of $93.1 million) and with prospects Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba expected to contribute this upcoming season, the hope around the Jets brass is this young core of players can take the team to the 2014 NHL playoffs in search of Stanley Cup glory.

Wheeler Signs for Six Years, $33.6 Million

Whew.

I was worried that by going to arbitration, Blake wheeler was maybe trying to term himself out with perhaps a two-year deal, then test the free agent market.
Fortunately for all Jets fans Wheeler avoided arbitration (which isn't a guarantee that things would have went his way) and signed a long-term six-year deal worth $33.6 million.

Great things in store...

"For me, it was virtually a no-brainer. I sat down with my agent this spring. I looked him in the eyes and said, 'This is where I want to be,'" Wheeler said Saturday during a conference call. "I believe we have what it takes to get to the next level. This is just part of that process. I really, truly believe that great things are in store for this group."

Talking about the Jets acquisition of Devin Setoguchi and Michael Frolic:

"I think they're great additions. You have two guys who have proved they can provide offense," Wheeler said. "Frolik just won a Stanley Cup. You can never discount adding a Stanley Cup champion to your team. That is an instant boost right away. I'm really excited with what they bring to the table."

The National Hockey League and Winnipeg Jets (along with every other NHL club) released their schedule for the NHL 2013-14 season that includes a 19-day break for the Jets so the league's players can participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics for their respective home countries.

The early schedule is favourable to the Jets as their first eight out of 10 games are in the confines of the MTS Centre.  However, seven of their final 10 are on the road.

Vancouver, Calgary and Chicago will appear for the first time at the MTS Centre since the Jets 2.0 were reborn in River City.
